What is Tetris?

Tetris is one of the oldest video games around, first released in 1984. It remains incredibly popular—perhaps because it’s so simple, and a bit addictive! The goal is to fill gaps with the blocks falling from above: each time you complete a full line, it disappears. You have only two controls—you can move the blocks horizontally or vertically. Tetris has an almost hypnotic quality; it’s deeply satisfying to slot each piece perfectly into place. We’re big fans of Tetris, especially now that so many different versions of the game exist!

History

Created in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov in the USSR, Tetris quickly became a global phenomenon thanks to its release on the Game Boy in 1989. Since then, thousands of ports and remakes have appeared across consoles, PCs, browsers, and mobile devices.

Mechanics & Controls

Play on a 10×20 grid. Use ←/→ to move, ↓ to soft-drop, and ↑ (or Q/W) to rotate. Many versions also add a “hold” feature and a ghost piece preview.

The Tetriminoes

There are seven shapes: I (line), J, L, O (square), S, T, and Z. Each can be rotated into four orientations.

Scoring System

Single: 100 × level; Double: 300 × level; Triple: 500 × level; Tetris (quad): 800 × level. Combos, back-to-back clears, and spins grant extra bonuses.

Platforms & Versions

Available on nearly every system: NES, Game Boy, PC, browsers, and mobile apps. Popular modern takes include Tetris Effect, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and Tetris 99.

Tournaments & Community

The Classic Tetris World Championship is held annually, featuring top players on the original NES version. Online speedrunning and battle-royale communities are also booming.

Tetris Variants

Beyond the classic, try Tetris 1989 for the black-and-white Game Boy feel, Tetris Arena for 5-player showdowns, or Tetris Rally 8P with eight simultaneous competitors. Themed spins like Tetris Triblo and Tetrolapse Tetris add fresh twists and challenges!

Objective

Blocks fall from the top—you must rotate and place them to form complete rows. Completed rows clear away. Misplace pieces too often, and you lose. Stay focused and adjust the speed: level 8 for lightning pace, level 4 for a more relaxed game.
